Call for papers: Special issue on "ICT and Crime"

2023-06-22

The Spanish Journal of Criminological Research (REIC) seeks submissions of original manuscripts for an upcoming special issue on "ICT and Crime", which will be published in 2024.

The objective of the special issue is to provide a space for high-quality empirical studies on the relationship between crime, the criminal justice system and information and communication technologies (ICT).

The rapid evolution of ICT has led to changes in the modus operandi and impact of many types of criminal activity. For example, new technologies can play an important role in intimate partner violence, they have served to promote the globalization of scams, and they have changed the recruitment and financing of terrorism, among many other areas. Likewise, the growing interrelation between ICT and crime has necessitated changes in crime control and represents a significant challenge for criminal justice institutions.

The academic interest in studying this subject is broad and it has significant relevance for the design of public policies. This special issue offers Spanish and international scholars the opportunity to continue advancing criminological knowledge related to digital society.

We are interested in national and international empirical studies on issues such as:

  • Trends in ICT-related crime.
  • Victimization through ICT and the role of ICT in specific crimes.
  • The prevention of new forms of cybercrime and of traditional crime that has been enabled by new technologies.
  • The challenges and responses of the penal system to cybercrime.
  • The use of ICT in criminal justice institutions.

People interested in submitting an article must send a summary of their proposal before July 20, 2023 to criminologiareic@gmail.com The abstract must include the following sections: 1) objectives, 2) methods, 3) results (which can be initial or expected results) and 4) conclusions (which can be initial or expected conclusions), and must not exceed 300 words.

The final version of manuscripts must be submitted before December 1, 2023, through the REIC editorial platform, and comply with the REIC article format and submission guidelines. In line with standard REIC policy, manuscripts in Spanish or English will be considered.

Dr. Steven Kemp (Universidad de Girona) and Dr. Abel González (Universidad a Distancia de Madrid) will be the guest editors of the special issue, as part of an initiative by the SEIC's ICT and Crime Working Group.
